Back

As you all now know, this past week/weekend we went house hunting in the D.C. metro area. We move there in three short weeks. Crazy. We gave ourselves five days to find proper rental housing before we were slated to fly back to Alabama. As you can imagine, the house hunt was a bit stressful. We landed in D.C. on Wednesday with several appointments to see houses (after exhausting all house-hunting resources) and were immediately disappointed when one of our best options (or so we thought) turned out to be, well, a throwback to 1980. Features included a seriously outdated kitchen, very few windows, a humongous powder PINK jacuzzi tub (ferociously big), and at least five different types of flooring. Needless to say, it was not going to work for us.

But, the very next day, we found the perfect place - 1 1930s Colonel in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. It is within walking distance of a Metro, Old Town, and our friends the Densons. Yes! (picture me doing an arm pump movement).
The stats: it has a great room, dining room, sun room, updated kitchen with breakfast nook, wood burning fireplace, two full bathrooms, and two bedrooms (one which was originally two rooms). What else? It has a lot of storage space (many closets, an attic and basement), as well as a fenced in backyard with a deck and pool. (Yes, I said pool). Okay, maybe that is enough bragging about our new place. I am just seriously stoked that we found somewhere to live and that it is close to our friends. The stress of it all was weighing heavily on me.

After we found our place, we were able to enjoy our stay a little and spend some quality time with the Densons, who were uber-hospitable. Lillian enjoyed playing with her BFF Ruby (pictures of them to come) and Ruby's toys. We enjoyed the company of Allen and Liz, who we have missed since their move a few months ago.

As you know, we ended up staying longer than we planned. A blizzard hit, which caused our flight to be cancelled twice. This, in turn, caused us to miss Bradford's grandmother's funeral, which was upsetting. We ended up taking two separate flights (Lily and me on an early flight and Bradford on a slightly later flight) and arrived home late Monday night. Stressful. But, all things considered, the trip went well. We had a wonderful time with our friends and are excited to join them in Alexandria in just a few weeks.

More pics from the trip -

Lily B stayed bundled and seemed to enjoy the snow.

Notice that the lawn here is filled with people sledding on various devices (some of them had legitimate sleds, while others seemed to be flying down the hills on baking sheets).

  1. I love your new house! It looks a lot like our beloved Dutch Colonial. Except we don't have as many sweet extras. (A pool! Wow.) You guys are going to enjoy living in an older home. It comes with episodes of stress, as older homes usually need a lot of maintenance, but the charming architectural details, the wood floors, the feeling of history all make it so much fun. Also, yay for living so close to friends and the Metro and Old Town. We also live (well, not right now) close to a wonderful friend and the center of our historic neighborhood, and it makes living in Omaha not only bearable, but a lot of fun. Gah, so excited for you. And apparently ready to get back to our own sweet, little home.
